What does a Digital Marketing Specialist do?
Digital marketing has been present on the market of Bosnia and Herzegovina for many years, but even today this term is still unknown to the general public. So, because of that, this is what most of my conversations look like in the last few months:
- Hi, Tarik. What's up?
- Oh, hello! All good here. Going home after work. What about you?
- Sorry but, where are you working?
- In a digital marketing agency.
And this is followed by about 10 seconds of awkward silence in which I think that my friend should probably know what digital marketing is, while they don't actually have a clue what my job is.
In order to get to know this very beautiful and interesting job a little better, in the following lines I will describe to you what a day in the life of a digital marketing specialist looks like.
What is digital marketing?
Before I describe my day, you need to know what digital marketing actually is and what it includes. In a nutshell, digital marketing implies the promotion of brands and products through digital media in order to connect companies online with potential customers. This connection can be achieved, for example, through email, social networks, web advertising, and in some cases also through text and multimedia messages.
Since most of my activities during working hours are related to advertising on social networks and web advertising (in other words, Google Ads advertising), I will try to bring them closer to you in the best possible way. If you haven't read my first blog, take a look at it later because you can find out what is needed to start Google advertising in it.
Now, let's dive into describing a day in my life!
The beginning of my working day
It all starts at nine o'clock, when I arrive at the office. I turn on my laptop, then log into email and Asana, that is the project management system we use at the FOR FIVE digital marketing agency, in order to see what tasks await me that day. After that, I make a rough schedule of activities and start completing them in order.
One of the first activities is to check the spent and remaining advertising budgets on the accounts of our partners. This is very important for partners who have limited budgets so that we don't end up in a situation where ads stop being active due to lack of funds, or so that we don't spend more money than we planned.
Campaign setup, monitoring and optimization
You have probably seen Facebook and Instagram ads by now. These are the ads that appear in your feed as soon as you think you need, for example, a new piece of clothing. Most people say that mobile devices eavesdrop on us and based on that they know what we need, but they say that they don't do that and that they collect information based on our online behavior. We will take their word for it.
On the other hand, Google ads are less known to the general public, even though you see them regularly every day and probably click on them here and there. You will see Google Ads Display campaigns, i.e. static and animated images, on almost every web portal in positions in and around the text.
In most cases, video ads will find you while you're watching how to make the perfect pizza dough on YouTube, and you've probably clicked on Search ads a million times when, for example, you searched Google for Adidas running shoes. In our previous blog you can find out how to create an effective YouTube campaign.
Okay, Tarik. But what do you actually do here? - Well, when I set up these campaigns, I try to find the right audience, so that you don't see Head skis instead of Adidas running shoes in your search, or that you don't see an ad for a retirement home on a web portal when you want to buy a new perfume.
In addition, I try to achieve that the ads of the partners whose accounts I work on are displayed in relevant places, or in the highest possible positions in the Google search results. This second part is caused by the fact that we all hate scrolling when searching for something, so in most cases we click on one of the first four Google search results.
This is one small part of the work that is necessary for proper and efficient optimization of campaigns. There are many more things hidden there, but I will gradually introduce you with them in the following blogs. So, stay tuned!
Maybe this seems a bit monotonous now, but we're about to get to the interesting part of my job.
Reporting and planning
After this, we will imagine that the end of the month is approaching, and that some of the partners create monthly advertising plans. In this case, I will analyze the performance of advertising in the previous period, trends on the market, and I will collect all available data from various sources. Then, together with my colleagues, I will create an advertising proposal for the following month, and I will forward it to our partner.
At the end of the month, I know that it will soon be time for the advertising performance reports, so I mentally prepare myself to write them. I think this is the case with many digital marketing specialists. This is the part of our job that we don't enjoy too much, but we get through these few days somehow.
It's time for interesting part of my job
When my colleagues and I have finished all the important duties, it's time for creativity and joking around. So, sometimes we record an interesting reel for Instagram, in the process of which we cause minor material damage. Sometimes we also entertain passers-by in the park while we record a story or watch a match of the B&H national team in the office. In addition to all this, at the events in which we participate, I also have the opportunity to meet a large number of public and famous personalities, and sometimes I get the opportunity to go on a city tour with Frenki, Kontra, Indigo and the amazing Helem Nejse team.
And don't worry, between all these responsibilities and activities, I very often find time to eat and drink coffee, as my increased body weight can confirm. But it's easier for me when I know that the rest of the team likes a good meal, so we often go out together for breakfast or afternoon coffee.
That's roughly what my working day would look like. A lot of socializing, interesting activities and challenges that reduce the weight and pressure of all other important obligations that we approach with maximum dedication.
